SUPPORT THE CONTINUATION OF STUDIO “WHERE ARE WE GOING?”

The studio ”Where are we going?” is about to end and we - the students - insist on the importance of the subject matter and we demand that it remains at our school. The studio emphasizes the relations between structures of power and built environment, that constantly effect the order in how societies are being organized within a globalized, neoliberal, post-capitalistic world. We are worried about architect students going in a more depoliticized direction, whereby it only tends to ‘estheticians’, completely disconnecting the architect from anxiety, where its absence leads us to believe that we can create a better world without problematizing its structure of power (R. Koolhaas). The problem is not about being interested in esthetics, because we find an importance in poetry and embodied experiences but about the question of; who is and is not included within it, and why by addressing the objects relation to its social-political-economical context. We need both. (H. Frichot)

Every time an architect frames a space or add a form - which implies a mode of life - always address a political condition, and thus the object becomes one of the most fundamental embodiments of policy within the city (P. V. Aureli). The built becomes materialized power (M. Tafuri). By studying the power-structures, we could engage in what role architecture should take - weighing different future alternatives - which solution does not necessery lie in conceiving a better city but rather taking possession of the present-day-city... preventing it from deteriorating (E. Engels).
