Change the legal grounds of permanent residency for doctoral students and other researchers in Sweden

The new changes in the law puts more psychological pressure on doctoral students in their course of studies. In addition, the new financial requirements are nearly impossible to fulfil with the current short-term fixed employment arrangements at universities for post doctoral researchers. It is also quite unfair to apply the rules on those who started their doctoral studies before July 20, 2021, as they already made their decision to pursue their doctoral education in Sweden given the set regulations back then. I think the new changes would make a large number of international university researchers not to consider Sweden for their future career paths (given the directions of current and expected future regulations towards immigrants in general and skilled ones in particular), which, I assume, would have a sever negative impact on Sweden as a competitive knowledge industrial country.

I have applied for PR on May 31 before changing the rules. However, my application is still pending because of changing the rules. When I applied there were no notifications for changing the rules. It is about 3 months that I can't exit Sweden. I have a family issue and I need to have a short trip to my country Iran, but I cannot because of lacking a visa.

Migration law in Sweden should be more friendly for the foreign researchers and should consider the differences in the employment routines for the young scientists: one never gets a permanent position in academia just after defending a thesis, unless you take a job in administration. This creates a lot of inequality and anxiety for the applicants.

It is very important for the doctoral students as well as Swedish society to change the rules so as to make it easier for the doctoral students.

We, PhD students, choose to come to do research in Sweden, among other things, because of the great work envoirment. This act will increase the level of stress and, thus, differenciate evem more the foreing students from the swedish ones. Aditionally, we are a group which is in hight demand in the country and, diffuculting the visa process will make more difficult to us to retorn all the investment the country pu in us in form of PhD.
